Kio Wigs

Designed for play!

Kio wigs are ready to wear, but be creative & make them your own!

The easiest way to style a Kio Wig is to wet your fingers & style the hair free-hand.

Let your mood be your muse & restyle as often as you like! Using a little hair gel will not hurt your wig and will help hold styles in place.

Do's & Don'ts

 Kio wigs are constructed of Japanese-made synthetic ‘hair’ fiber similar to human-wigs or rooted-hair dolls. Keep your wigs looking new by following a few simple rules;

  • DO NOT expose your wigs to excessive heat or heated appliances such as blow dryers or curling irons as they will melt the hair fibers.
  • DO wash your wigs (in cool water).
  • DO brush your wigs but only when the hair is completely dry. Brush gently with a small comb or brush (metal teeth are recommended).
  • DO NOT re-color your wig.
  • DO experiment and have fun. Although we don’t recommend re-coloring, you can add additional color by ‘rooting’ new fibers into the existing wig (similar to rerooting a doll).
  • DO make the wig uniquely your own and if that means cutting it a little shorter or fringing the bangs, then use small, sharp scissors. Just remember if you cut too much, it’s not going to grow back! If you’re not confident cutting it yourself, you could ask your hairdresser to do a snip or two.
  • DO NOT use silicone based products that are advertised to add luster and shine to vinyl, such as car interior & tire sprays. People may rave about products such as ‘Son Of A Gun’ but the silicone in these products will eventually wear down leaving your wig dry and brittle. Instead, choose a water-based or non-silicone product if you want to add additional shine to your wig.
  • DO NOT panic if some loose hair falls out when you first comb your wig. This is natural as there will be a certain amount of loose hair in the wig from the manufacturing process.

Cleaning Your Wigs

Always clean your wigs in cold or cool water.

Put your expensive shampoos away. Your wig won’t care if you’re using a cheap shampoo or a hundred dollar bottle of hair care product. In fact, your wigs will look and respond better to products especially designed for plastics and synthetics, such as Wig Shampoo (can be purchased at any wig salon). Otherwise, common household products, such as Windex or Fantastic, work really well. If you do use liquid soap or a common shampoo on your wigs, you should dilute it by mixing ¼ soap with ¾ water. Wet hair, apply cleaner of choice, lather gently and swirl in cool running water to rinse.

A spray-on conditioner can also be used for tangles, but what works even better is a liquid fabric softener.

Styling Your Wigs

  • Wetting your fingers and hand styling your wigs generally works best.
  • Kio Wigs can be curled or straightened using a ‘Boil Perm’ but you should always test a small area of hair first, just to be safe. To add curl, simply roll the hair in whatever method you like; tiny rollers, cut drinking straws held in place with bobby pins or twist ties work well. Then dip the hair into boiling water, take out immediately and let dry. Once dry, remove ‘curlers’. To straighten hair, dip into boiling water, immediately remove and comb straight and let dry.
  • We recommend using a metal tooth comb or brush as the metal will provide a smoother movement through the hair.

Wig Sizes

Size 4 For Barbie, Fashion Royalty and similar sized dolls

Size 4-5 For AvantGuard, Sybarites and similar sized dolls

Additional Sizes coming soon.

Measuring For A Wig

Wrap a fabric measuring tape around the circumference of your doll’s head starting just behind the doll’s ear and going across the forehead. Measurements need to be in inches.

If the measurement of you doll’s head is 4”, then you need a size four wig. Your doll’s head measurement may not exactly coordinate with standard wig sizes so just choose the wig size closest to the head’s measurement.

Wig Caps

Silicone Wig caps are always recommend when wigging dolls to keep the wigs securely in place and stop slippage when styling.

Rooted Head Dolls - Removing the Hair

Rooted Hair Dolls are difficult to wig but an endless array of new looks are made possible by simply removing the rooted hair from your doll.

  • Using small, sharp scissors cut the hair as close to the scalp as possible
  • Remove the head from the body. If the head doesn’t “pop off’ easily then you’ll need to soften the neck joint with a blow dryer or by pouring boiling water over the neck.
  • Insert strong tweezers or a small pair of long nosed pliers inside the head and pull out the hair plugs. It is tough to see inside the heads, especially smaller dolls such as Barbie, so you need to fish around and just keep pinching and pulling until all the hair is removed. Strong hands are required to remove the hair plugs. It is tedious work but well worth the effort.
  • Once all of the hair is removed and you havea perfectly bald head, your doll is ready for her new wig.
